What’s the difference between a coach, mentor and consultant?
Coach, mentor and consultant are terms often used interchangeably. And, whilst there is certainly some overlap, the reality is that there is more difference than similarity.
The difference rises mainly from the core philosophy:
I woke up this morning feeling …
I woke up this morning feeling antsy and eager to get stuck into planning our next 6-week project.
Then on my drive into work, I remembered the email I’d sent my clients ahead of their planning sessions this Friday. I’d given them work to do, but hadn’t done it myself.
ONE meeting, ONCE a week. ☝️
ONE meeting, ONCE a week.
If you lead a team, the key to shifting your culture from good to great is simpler than you think.
Start with one brief meeting, with each of your team, once per week.
I took my daughter on a date
Yesterday afternoon I took my daughter on a date: We went to see Raya and The Last Dragon, ate Wendy’s and strolled around the central city.
As we were walking back to the car she looked up at me and said, “That was a special date Dad, I love you”.
Sick of sitting through hours …
Sick of sitting through hours and hours of 1:1 interviews, only to end up with the wrong employee? 😓
Here’s a better way to interview:
1. Invite your shortlist to a group interview (up to 10 people/group)
Are your ideas often falling flat?
Have you ever had what you thought was a great business idea, but the moment you began sharing it with someone on your team it fell completely flat?
This used to happen to me all the time until I realised that people process information differently.
To anyone who isn’t ‘feelin it’ today 🥱
Not many people get excited by the prospect of getting joint-locked or choked at 6 o’clock in the morning. 🥋 This morning as I opened the front door, the air cold, and the stars still out. I found myself wondering if I’d be better off turning around…
How to make better Decisions…
One of the biggest challenges of running a business is the sheer volume of critical decisions that you have to make as an owner.
Whether that's hiring a new team member, setting the direction of the business, or adjusting your product or service mix. There are decisions throughout the business that you ultimately are responsible for.
Chances are if you read books as a kid, you’ve come across 'Grandpas Slippers'.
If you haven’t read it, then here’s a 1 sentence summary.
Grandpa needs new slippers, but Grandpa likes his old slippers.
When was the last time you asked...
What could you do to help them?
Just wrapped up coaching for the day and one thing really stood out from a session today with a construction business owner, who's grown significantly over the last few years and really grown…
Would you want to work for you? 🤔
Five o'clock yesterday and the final session of the day, my client made a comment, which really made me sit up and my seat and take notice.
He said I'm realising that we finally building a business that I would actually want to work for.
WHAT DO YOU SEE?
A millennial? An un-engaged employee? A business losing money?
Maybe.
However, I believe if you’re experiencing these challenges in your team, then the first place to look, is in the mirror.
Overwhelmed by goal chat? Start with this.
Maybe it’s the sunny Tasman weather, the time of year or simply the change of scenery, but one of the highlights of our family’s annual summer holiday, is a dinner date with my wife.
Learning to talk, with someone who can’t
Bowie knows what she wants in life.
But Bowie doesn’t have many words.
Sounds like most kids right?
The Rules of Business
Every game has a set of rules.
These rules ensure the game is played fairly and there is no confusion as to who’s winning.
The game of business has a set of rules too.
People are complex
I often get asked what it’s like being a business coach.
And I usually give the same answer.
The business part is easy.
The people bit is more complex.
Are you a Fox or a Hedgehog?
An ancient Greek parable states, “The fox knows many things, but the hedgehog knows one big thing.”
In business it’s easy to become a fox: Fast but not the fastest, creative but not genius, GOOD but not GREAT.
Where did you pick that up?
Like you, my behaviour has patterns.
Those patterns show up in every area of my life, especially business.
How to increase your hourly rate
Let’s be honest, you’re not paying yourself much.
Not when you consider the financial risk you took in starting your business, the long-hours, grumpy customers and staff headaches. Sometimes, you think it would be easier to just be an employee.
The Key to Moving Beyond Amateur
Teaching yourself is certainly a great way to start begin learning a skill. However, there is a down-side which is not often talked about.
