Maybe it’s the sunny Tasman weather, the time of year, or just a change of scenery, but one of the highlights of our family’s annual summer holiday is a dinner date with my wife.
We look back on the year that’s been – what we’re grateful for, what we’ve learned. And we look ahead to who we want to become and what we want to achieve.
As we donned our best camping clothes and walked out of the camping ground hand-in-hand, we debated where to eat.
We settled on “the usual,” a spot we’ve visited for the last three years.
The scenery is great, the food is good … the service is terrible.
It’s a bit like holidaying in Fiji – you know things will happen eventually, but you’re going to have to grit your teeth in the meantime.
Knowing this, we still returned.
And our expectations were exceeded – but not in a good way.
Without going into every detail, the vibe from the staff could be summed up in Ed Sheeran’s chorus: “You need me man, I don’t need you.”
At the end of the evening, I turned to my wife and said the most grating part of the experience wasn’t the service - but observing a business that’s stagnant (at best).
To me, you’re either growing or dying. And there are few thoughts more unsettling than imagining my clients’ businesses – or my own – in the same place in 12 months.
At this time of year, it’s easy to get lost in the deluge of goal posts and motivational rants.
But if all you do is commit to getting 1% better, you’re already ahead of the pack.
So do yourself, your team, your customers, and your business a favour. Make that commitment.
Today.
