Maybe it’s the sunny Tasman weather, the time of year or simply the change of scenery, but one of the highlights of our family’s annual summer holiday, is a dinner date with my wife.
Even though we eat out a lot during the year, this one’s a little bit different.
We look back on the year that’s been, what we’ve been grateful for and what we’ve learned.
And we look to the year ahead, who we want to become and what we want to achieve.
As we donned our number 1’s and walked out of the camping ground hand-in-hand, we debated where to dine.
We decided on ‘the usual’ where we’ve visited each of the last 3-years.
The scenery is great, the food is good, and the service is terrible.
It’s a bit like holidaying in Fiji - you know things will happen eventually, but you’re going to have to grit your teeth.
Knowing this, we still decided to return.
And our expectations were exceeded - but not in a good way.
Without detailing every little incident, the vibe from the wait staff was summed up in Ed Sheehan’s chorus, “You need me man, I don’t need you”.
At the end of the evening, I turned to my wife and said the most grating part of the experience, was observing a business that’s stagnant (at best).
To me, you’re either growing or dying, and there are few thoughts than imagining my clients’ businesses or my own being in the exact same place in 12-months time.
At this time of the year, it’s easy to get caught up in the deluge of goal-related posts.
But if you do nothing other than commit to getting 1% better - you’re already ahead of the pack.
So do yourself, your team, your customers and your business a favour, and make that commitment.
Today.
