Are you a Fox or a Hedgehog?

Fox or Hedgehog - Marcus Shaw Business Coach.gif

An ancient Greek parable states, “The fox knows many things, but the hedgehog knows one big thing.”

In business it’s easy to become a fox: Fast but not the fastest, creative but not genius, GOOD but not GREAT.

Central to building a great business is choosing a sole focus. Becoming more like a hedgehog, and less like a fox.

Beware however, of the curse of competence - just because you’re GOOD at it, doesn’t mean you can become the BEST at it.

Becoming great is as much about what you choose to ignore as it is what you choose to prioritise.

So ask yourself these questions about your business (honestly):

  • What are we good at?

  • What could we become the best at?

If you can’t answer those questions, then keep searching. Or, risk mediocrity.
