How to Diagnose The Real Issues in Your Business

Recently I spent $2500, fixing a $3 problem. 😱

Water was pooling around the base of our hot-water cylinder, so I called our plumber and he recommended we replace it.

A week after the new cylinder was installed, the pool of water re-appeared.

Uh-oh.

Turns out the problem was just a faulty rubber washer on the hose connecting our washing machine to the laundry tub.

Ouch.

But, It got me thinking.

How often have you spent time and money fixing something in your business, only to find out you’ve mis-diagnosed the problem?

Your sales pipeline dries up, so you frantically hit the phones and drum up some work.

Things look good for a while, but 6-months later the same thing happens again.

To avoid this, you need to separate the symptom you see, from the problem that is.

I've found thinking on these 3 powerful questions will do exactly that:

  1. What are the possible reasons I’m noticing this symptom?

  2. What ISN’T happening that, if it did happen, would cause the gap (symptoms) to either narrow or disappear?

  3. What IS happening that, if it stopped happening, would cause the gap (symptoms) to narrow or disappear?

What might happen if you took 30-minutes away from your office reflecting on these questions?
