Switching off isn’t easy

Switching off isn’t easy for me.

I love my craft, and I’m always thinking about ways to get better, and how to help my clients do the same.

At the same time, I realise the importance of rest and recovery. So over the last 12-months I’ve discovered a few practices which help me to do that well.

Time by myself: I spend the majority of my week intensely focused on conversations with people, so i’ve found time by myself is critical to clearing my head. My favourite thing to do during this time is getting above the city - there’s something about leaving the built environment and looking out on the expanse of the Canterbury plains which is extremely good for the soul.

Leveling with my kids: I try and look for opportunities to join my kids in their activities. Whether it’s playing lego, drawing or reading, immersing myself in their world not only helps me to be more present but also lets them I know they’re worthy of my full attention.

Trading sleep-ins: My wife and I give each other a sleep in most weekends. She has Saturday and I have Sunday. It’s a couple of hours where we can catch-up on sleep, read, or mindlessly scroll cat videos knowing the other person is leading the charge with the kids.
