Business Injuries

It was the week my wife was due with our third child, and my last jiu-jitsu class before taking some time off. 🥋

As sparring, began, I wrapped up my opponents arm in a “Lasso Guard’ and attempted to sweep him onto his back. As I extended my leg, he countered, and in doing so put an immense amount of pressure on the outside of my knee. Seconds later, the pain was instant and the ‘pop’ was loud enough to stop the class. 😭

This morning as I began my second week back running, I realised that just like people, businesses can also suffer injuries. A ‘business injury’ may be an expensive mistake you have to fix, it may be a personal grievance from a team member, or it may be a spouse who’s sick of not seeing you. 🆘

Whilst it’s always best to prevent a problem from happening, sometimes we do leave things too late and end up with a ‘business injury’.

If your business has an injury, here’s a process for rehabilitation:

  1. STOP ⛔️ – halt the activity causing the problem immediately

  2. DIAGNOSE 🤒 – figure out the full extent of the damage

  3. PLAN 📈 – map out a graduated path back to 100%

  4. ACTION 🏋 – follow the plan; rehab doesn’t happen on its own

  5. ADJUST 🔧 – tweak your approach for the future; most injuries are preventable

Recovering from a business injury isn’t quick, and it isn’t easy. But just like rehabbing a knee, if you stop, assess, plan, act, and adjust, you can get back stronger – and prevent the same mistake from sidelining you again.
