Could You Actually Sell Your Business?
My Old (Expensive to Service) Car
Busy, profitable… and still closing down.
I recently took my old car to an auto-electrician after having a few problems. And I got a shock…
The experience itself was excellent.
The guy I spoke to on the phone was great.
The office manager was super onto it.
The workshop was clean and tidy.
And the quote was - complete shock - reasonable.
So when the office manager said:
“You better be quick to book in… we’re shutting down, and once word gets out, we’ll be inundated.”
I was genuinely surprised.
After 30 successful years in business, they were simply winding it up.
Great reputation.
Books full of repeat customers.
A business that clearly worked.
And they weren't selling.
Why wasn't it being sold?
Family health concerns were part of the picture, but I don’t know the full story.
From what I picked up, it was a case of “life’s too short”… with a side of something else. Maybe:
The value wasn’t what they thought it would be.
Too much of the business depended on the owners.
The books weren’t in order.
… and they simply didn’t have time on their side to fix it.
A Common Story …
Every business eventually gets wound up or sold. Only one of those puts cash in the bank!
You can’t build a sellable business at exit time. You build it years earlier, by making the right moves now.
For a thriving business to be wrapping up, felt unnecessary and sad. 😪
But it’s a common story.
Most businesses we see, couldn’t be sold for a number the owner would be happy with ... at least not if they had to sell in a hurry.
If YOU had to sell your business tomorrow could you?
How dependent is the business on you?
How strong are the systems?
How predictable are the profits?
How clean are the books?
Would someone else see the same value in the business that you do?
… And in the meantime, would a more ‘sellable’ business also be a more enjoyable business to run?
